By education and experience - Accountant with a specialty in taxation. Formerly a CPA (license has lapsed). Masters degree in law of taxation from University of Denver. Now retired. Part time work during baseball season as receptionist & switchboard operator for the Colorado Rockies. This gig feeds my soul in ways I have trouble articulating. One daughter, and four grandchildren. I share the house with two cats; a big goof of a cat called Grinch (named as a joke for his easy going "whatever" disposition); and Lady, a shelter adoptee with a regal bearing and sweet little soprano voice. I would be very bereft if it ever becomes necessary to keep house without a cat.

Coors Field Nugget Two

It's been a discouraging month for Rockies fans. From sitting atop the NL West, and posting the best W-L record in all of ML ball, the team went on an excrutiating slide which was painful to watch. The "ace" of the pitching staff couldn't find his stride, Jorge delaRosa, the only left handed starter is out for at least a year - scheduled for Tommy John surgery, and the heart of the batting order has not produced much.

More than one cynical observer has wondered if the multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts signed by Troy Tulowitski and Cargo Gonzales have had dampening effects on their batting averages. With all those dollars rolling in, there's no reason to prove themselves any longer, right? I don't think I share that view, but I can certainly understand it.

But let's talk about something else.

I missed one entire homestand recovering from a six hour trip to the hospital and what's commonly called "band aid" surgery. Even though the surgery went well, the md still wanted me to take it very easy for two weeks. Planning to be back at 100% ASAP, I followed her advice.

When delaRosa was injured, the original scuttlebutt was that the team would manage with a right handed rotation, the only left handed possibility was pitching in AA Tulsa. But guess what? Someone in the front office decided to give Juan Nicasio a chance. And Hollywood couldn't have scripted it better. Against the Cardinal's Jaime Garcia, he gave up one unearned run, the Rockies bats and defensive play matched his effort and the result was a 15-4 win. One of the very few bright spots in May.

Sunday of Memorial Day weekend was Military Appreciation Day. The morning began with a St Louis radio station trying to get in touch with manager Tony laRussa. I had the radio producer on one line, and was trying to reach laRussa on the other line, which kept ringing busy. The producer was getting more and more frustrated. I got in touch with the clubhouse staff on a third line, and learned that laRussa was trying to call the radio station back. The producer and I decided to disconnect our call, and he was going to try to find laRussa in the queue of calls waiting on his console.

On field recognition that day included a group from the Order of the Purple Heart. At least on member either got lost or missed the time to report - because he arrived in the lobby just in time to watch the rest of his group being introduced on the field and broadcast in house to the TV in the lobby. We arranged for him to be escorted down to be part of the on field group watching the rest of the ceremony.

Also introduced on the field was a group from Freedom Service Dogs. This organization trains dogs, mostly mutts, and almost exclusively shelter adoptees, to help persons with varying disabilities. We weren't sure how many to expect, some of the members of the group arrived over an hour early, and we were queried often both by the arriving dog owners and the stadium staff escorts on the progress of the group formation. Eventually we settled on an expected group of five - and when we were able to radio that our dog count had reached that magic number - there was an answering cheer from the promotions intern assigned to escort them.
