Books and other stuff I feel like discussing

By education and experience - Accountant with a specialty in taxation. Formerly a CPA (license has lapsed). Masters degree in law of taxation from University of Denver. Now retired. Part time work during baseball season as receptionist & switchboard operator for the Colorado Rockies. This gig feeds my soul in ways I have trouble articulating. One daughter, and four grandchildren. I share the house with two cats; a big goof of a cat called Grinch (named as a joke for his easy going "whatever" disposition); and Lady, a shelter adoptee with a regal bearing and sweet little soprano voice. I would be very bereft if it ever becomes necessary to keep house without a cat.

Books Update - More Fiction

HEARTS OF SAND by Jane Haddam

Haddam is a long time favorite. She has a recurring cast of eccentric characters, among them her protagonist Gregor Demarkian, who is a retired FBI agent. Demarkian is often hired on a short term basis to consult with various law enforcement agencies. The author often bases her plots on events which have some basis in fact.

The latest involves a woman, in hiding for many years, after she was involved with a bank robbery that escalated tragically and involved the murder of a police officer. Her body is found in her childhood home, which had stood unoccupied for almost as long as the woman had been in hiding. Haddam also has several pointed observations about contemporary tabloid press and related over exaggerated "journalism."

COVENANT WITH HELL by Priscilla Royal

Royal's series is set in a 13th century priory and features Eleanor, the prioress and Thomas, one of the monks assigned to watch over the spiritual health of the community. Royal always includes notes on her research into this time period, and observations about the society of the day. In this entry, Eleanor and Thomas have traveled on a pilgrimage of their own. Their sojourn at the destination is interrupted by several suspicious deaths, complicated by a potential threat of the life of the King of England, who is expected to arrive on a pilgrimage of his own.

I didn't used to think I enjoyed historical mysteries, but after reading authors like Royal and Eric Mayer and Mary Reed, I've expanded my tastes.

PIECE OF MY HEART by Peter Robinson

My book log says I read this back in 2006. Maybe so, but if I did, I didn't recall anything about it. I saw the title on the shelf at the library and brought it home. Inspector Alan Banks investigates the murder of a free lance journalist found bludgeoned to death in a small vacation cottage in Yorkshire. There are flashbacks to another death of a young woman at a 1969 music festival, and soon the reader understands that the present day journalist had been investigating the late 60's events, both with an aim to publish a story, but for personal reasons as well.

I didn't recall anything of the story as I read, so while I have no answer for how the title ended up in my reading log, I'm very glad I picked it up this time.

That's the end of my reading log for 2013. More on my "best of" list in the next entry.
