The Ups and Downs of Freelancing

I do think we're actually going to get this proposal done on time. I think it's even going to be pretty good. We could make it stronger if we had more time, but I think that's always the case with these things.

It's funny -- there comes a time in just about every freelance project I've done where I become convinced that all the writing that I've done sucks, and that my client is going to be terribly unhappy, and that I'm going to be unable to pull the job off. I hit that point about noon yesterday, about 3 hours before I was due to meet with the client. I took my laptop over the Starbucks, and cranked out a few more pages to bring to the meeting. Then hopped in the car and headed over to the meeting. I got stuck in traffic on the San Mateo Bridge, and arrived late but happy, having sung lustily along to classic rock radio the whole way. (And was reminded of Zed's recent post about cars serving as a "room of one's own" for many people. My car is just about the only place you'll ever catch me doing my Robert Plant impersonation.)

And the meeting went fine, and the client was in fact very happy with what I'd done, and I feel perfectly confident in my ability to do the job.

But Robert Plant still has a higher vocal range than I do, dammit.

I will be glad when this proposal goes in the FedEx box on Monday, though. Haven't done much this week except work on it and go to job interviews. I need a break.
