Proposition 66

Full Text of Proposition

What does it do? Amends California's "Three Strikes" law so that third strike sentencing guidelines only come into effect if the third strike is for a violent or serious felony. Slightly redefines what a serious felony is. Increases first-time sentence requirements for child molestors.

How I plan to vote: Yes. Yes! Yes! Yes!

Why? Because sentencing people to 25 years to life for shoplifting is incredibly stupid and wasteful and does nothing to reduce crime. Because criminal justice experts the world over agree that the California justice system is broken, and that "Three Strikes" is a big part of the reason why. Because proposition 66 could potentially save the state several hundred million dollars a year when it comes into full effect.

All this, and tougher penalties for people who molest small children. (I regard this last as basically a bit of red meat thrown to the "tough-on-crime" crowd, but I'm frankly just fine with the idea that people who molest children under 10 should get long prison terms.)
