Adventures in Skin Care

So, lately, I've been getting dry skin on my face. I don't know if it's the weather, or my new exercise regimen, or age, or hormones, or what, but my cheeks and forehead have been very dry. My nose and chin still manage to be oily. Yes, I have developed the dreaded "combination skin", which sounds like something which ought to come with a side of fries and a medium soft-drink.

So, I went to the drug store yesterday, thinking that I'd get some moisturizer or something.

Now, you must understand that my facial skin care regimen up to this point...well, it hardly deserves being called a regimen. I wash my face. I use this nifty exfoliating scrub from the Body Shop that has tea tree oil in it every now and then, because it feels good. But that's pretty much it.

The last time I had anything resembling a skin care regimen was when I was an oily pimply teenager, and it involved swabbing with pads soaked in isopropyl alcohol and god knows what else, and washing with funny-smelling amber colored soap made by Neutrogena. This was clearly not what was called for here.

So, I went to Walgreens, and I found the face stuff. And lo, I was perplexed. Because there was a freaking entire aisle of this stuff, and all of it was promising to "tighten pores", "smooth wrinkles", "reverse the effects of aging". I am perfectly happy with the diameter of my pores, my face is too chubby to wrinkle, and if I woke up looking ten years younger, that would just make people give Daniel dirty looks when we go out together.

And it was all in teeny little bottles or pots, at prices comparable to a shot of good scotch. I considered going and getting the scotch instead, but I'm not sure if it's noncomedogenic.

Anyway, I eventually found some stuff that claimed it would make my skin less dry (which, silly me, I had thought was the point of moisturizer), and I ended up with a tube of facial scrub and a bottle of lotion. Both made by Neutrogena.

After one whole day of use, I can say that the bits of my skin that were prone to being dry are less dry, and the bits that were prone to being oily are less oily. And the diameter of my pores in unchanged. Yay!
