How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Spare the Air

Y'all remember back in October, when I ran over a nail and arrived at work with a flat tire?

Well, yesterday, I ran over a screw. Fortunately, I noticed this when I was about a half mile from home, long before freeways entered into my morning commute. I pulled off onto a residential side street and called Acura Roadside Assistance, who once again offered excellent customer service to the point of being embarrassing. (I'm just not used to all this, "Yes, Ms. Shaffer. We'll take care of that right away, Ms. Shaffer. Is there anything else we can do for you, Ms. Shaffer?")

Then I called a couple of people at work to let them know that I would be late. (Cell phones rule.) Then Acura called me back to let me know that someone would be there to deal with my car in 40 minutes.

I happened to be a block away from my friendly neighborhood Starbucks, so I went and got an iced Americano. As I finished it, which couldn't have taken me more than 15 minutes, I got a call from Unique Towing, saying that they had a truck out by my car and could I come on out.

So I jogged a block back to my car, and the towing guy had my flat tire off and the spare tire on in no time. If you ever need a tow truck in San Jose, I recommend Unique Towing. I drove home, and asked Daniel to take me to the Caltrain station so I could get to work. It turned out that it was a Spare the Air day, so I got to ride the train and the bus for free. I guess that was some small consolation. It was nice to confirm that I can, in a pinch, get to work on public transit, though it's not fast. (If Daniel hadn't been able to take me to the Caltrain station, I could have walked to the light rail station, and taken light rail to Caltrain.)

Saturday morning, I'll take the car over to the tire place, and see what they can do for me.

What a pain. What I really want to know is why the heck there are so many screws and nails and things lying around for me to run over?
