Here we go. This argument is worse than having a debate over abortion. What is your very favorite pizza and where did you get it? The answer will be divided between the folks who like New York style (thin crust) and those who like CHicago style (deep dish. Some of you may squak about how you prefer cheaper (cardboard) pizza. So, let's just say this...everyone is entitle to their own opinion. There is no right or wrong. I will say that the very best pizza that I have ever tasted was just outside of Chicago. I was on a business trip back in the early 90's. A friend and I took a taxi ride- with some guy named "Guido" or "Vinnie"; well, some mobster-type name. When we told him we wanted to try a true Chicago Pizza- he shut off the meter and took us to some "seedy neighborhood" with brick buildings- yeah, I know, that is anywhere in Illinois. Anyway, he dropped us off in front of a "house" told us to know on the door and tell the person that "Joe sent us"- who the HELL was Joe? So, we took him at his word and walked to a darkened door- knocked- and some old lady looked through the peephole. We said that "Joe had sent us" like it was a secret code. Well, she pulled the door open and took us into a restaurant that probably had four tables. She never showed us a menu- she just asked "are you really hungry"? I told her I was starving- we had been out drinking all night- the night before- in Chicago- on Rush Street- in a blizzard. I was more "hung over" than hungry. She proceded to bring us THE BEST Minnestrone soup that I have ever tasted- well, until my current wife made some recently- whoooo, almost blew that. Then, she brought us some salad with the SECOND best olive and vinegar dressing that I have ever had. When the pizza arrived- it must have been 36 inches in diameter and 6 inches thick. It was Garlic and Cheese and everything in the World. It was THE BEST. I was so damn full...but I had to finish it or I was going to get "whacked"- well, that is what she told me. WHen we were ready to go- the cab driver was still outside and the total was $20- CASH...that was it. Two soups, two salds, a HUGE pizza, and god knows how many drinks- and it was $20. SHe would not take anymore from me. I later found out that our host was the mother of the cab driver!!! Now quickly, other great pizza that I have sampled- Spagos- yes, at THE restaurant- I know, I am embarassed to admit it. I had an Artichoke Pizza that was probably 6 inches wide and 1/10 inch thick for around $30- but it was "out of this world". What a man won't do for a woman. Amici's Pizza in the Bay Area is up there as one of the best...and there is another in San Francisco- but I have not been there in 25 years- so I forget the name. Now- the chain pizzas. Round Table is still one of the best. I like Papa Murphys as a cheap-take-home-pizza. As far as the "cardboard pizzas" I have to say that I will take the Chuck E Cheese one as decent- and I have to say that, as my kids might read this...and Mountain Mikes Pizzas are good for the price- when they are on sale. My God- I just remembered the name of the ones in San Francisco- Uno's Pizzeria. They were REALLY good. No matter how many I list- I will have arguments about how they "suck" That is the fun of this. Nobody agrees on pizza. I just remembered another one- there was a hole-in-the-wall pizza joint inside the Hillsdale (san Mateo, CA) mall that made hand-tossed pizza. That dude had THE BEST Linguisa Pizza. My mother used to drag me there as a kid just so she could eat the pizza. Of course, I was able to wander around the mall and look at toys. I always wondered if it was "the pizza" or the dude tossing the pizza....
