Wow, where have I been? I just heard on the radio that the National Football League is a "non-profit"! I knew for a long time that they have the status of a "legal monopoly", but I never heard they were a non-profit. No, I thought, that's a joke. Is it April? No.

So I searched for the idea on the web and turn up dozens of articles about this. It's been known for a long time, and if you didn't know it, you must be ill-informed! (Like me!)

Here's an example, but believe me, it's true... How the NFL Fleeces Taxpayers - (Atlantic SEP 18, 2013).

Why should I be surprised? Not that the information hasn't been there, but I can't tell you why I never read it, or heard it before. I'm reasonably well-informed and it never occurred to me that the IRS would allow them to be a non-profit and still let the owners pocket billions! Oh, yeah, I forgot for a minute, it's Bizarro World in Washington. Right.

All while we wage-earners (full disclosure, I'm retired), are taxed one way, and the Oligarchy is taxed a different way. It's nice to write all the rules so it all benefits you, isn't it? Not exactly a "level-playing field", however, which, considering the sport, one might expect.

ADDENDUM 5/27/14

OK, my brother set me straight yesterday. He also researched this and found out that each TEAM is FOR-PROFIT, but that the NFL, (the organization that makes tens of millions of dollars per year itself, through "franchising"), enjoys the non-profit status.

Um. Explains everything, doesn't it, Congress? How about fixing some of this stuff, or should we just put it off until the next generation, or the one after that? Run for cover, Congress, here comes your great-grandchildren!
