200 area crashes blamed on black ice

Motorists across mid-Michigan were involved in at least 200 crashes - most of them minor - Wednesday night as they encountered the first freezing temperatures and blowing snow of the season.

Many of the crashes involved drivers sliding into guardrails or into other disabled vehicles.

The main problem for police departments that were responding to call after call wasn't the snow - which was light, Ingham County sheriff's Sgt. Danielle Patrick said.

It was the nearly invisible ice.

"The overpasses froze so there (was) a lot of black ice out there and people just weren't expecting it," Patrick said.

I knew it was yucky out there!
