From today's New York Times:

The best selling mystery books for 2006 (through March 18) are

MEMORY IN DEATH J.D. Robb
SKELETON MAN Tony Hillerman
S IS FOR SILENCE Sue Grafton
SEA CHANGE Robert Parker
EDGE OF EVIL J.A. Jance
HARD TRUTH Nevada Barr
WITH NO ONE... Elizabeth George
TWO MINUTE RUSH Robert Crais
DEATH DANCE Linda Fairstein
BLACK ANGEL John Connolly

Of the titles listed above, eight are part of a series. So why do publishers want our favorite series writers to write standalones? I hear of any number of authors whose series 'don't perform as well as expected' and after 8 or 10 or more in a popular series, are asked to 'do something different' or just told that their services are no longer needed.

How can we, as fans, let the publishers know we want more series books? The only way I can think of is to keep buying our favorites. And search out new authors who might become favorites. Give them a chance.

It has been 5 years since Jo Dereske's Miss Zukas has last appeared on the scene. There is a new book coming out this year. It would be very interesting to see what caused this new book to suddenly appear. And Harlan Coben, after writing several very lucrative thrillers, is finally coming out with another Myron Bolitar book. Perhaps we can get some more of our favorites to be resurrected.

What are some of your favorite dormant series? How do you think we can work on the publishers to bring the characters back? Or do we need to work on the authors? What do you think?
