TV/Movie: Juno

I used to like grey, rainy days. then somewhere along the line, I stopped. I grew to dread them because I knew they meant I would feel drained and lethargic. Like a sloth on Nyquil.

I think the change came about around the time I quit drinking. Grey days meant an excuse to stay indoors and drink until I passed out in front of the TV or over a book. I wasn't doing much in those days.

Then I decided I wanted to do stuff, so I quit drinking. I started to get things done. Pretty Maggie came along and made life more perfect.

But now I notice the lethargy induced by grey days, and it would drive me nuts if I could summon up the energy.

And I could feel it coming over the weekend. After a couple of weeks of glorious sunshine, I was ready to take on the world. But you could feel the weather changing on Saturday, and while I got stuff done, I didn't get to half of what I wanted to. Still, it wasn't an inactive weekend either. I got my necessary Saturday chores done (shopping, banking, bill paying) and later that day we drive up to Brockton to visit some friends. We had a very nice time, but when we got back we had a snack, then promptly fell asleep until 10 or so. That threw things off further.

Sunday I went to visit my dad for a bit, came back exhausted. We went out to the stores for odds 'n ends, came back and after dinner and a little bit of work, i found myself dropping off to sleep way early in the evening.

You may have noticed there were no posts this weekend.

And now all I can think about is getting home to nap for a bit.

Ah well. This will pass too.

Among the odds and ends this weekend, we got to a bookstore where I spent a shocking amount of money. Among my grabs were the next two books in Elizabeth Moon's Vatta's War series, some books on screenwriting, the latest collection from Penny Arcade, and the first of a series of reprints of old Doc Savage tales.

The Doc Savage tales were a fun find. I remember hearing about these reprint editions, but didn't expect to see them at my local Barnes & Noble. I'm treating myself to some good old-fashioned 30s action-adveture pulp fiction with a dash of science fiction. It suffers, a little, from that whole "perfect man" paradigm popular in old pulp stories. Doc Savage is too perfect, and thus harder to identify with as a hero. But the plots are suspenseful, even if some of the phrasings seem hopelessly archaic to today's reader.

Two-fisted action with the Man of Bronze!

We picked up the movie Juno this weekend as well. The Special Edition, actually, which came with a nice bound copy of the script. We've only watched a small part of it so far--the point up to when Juno tells her parents that she's preggers. We're already impressed. the characterization and dialogue are superb. The pacing is well thought out, and the musical choices are intriguing. We'll likely watch more tonight (we usually watch DVDs together during dinner).

Today's link takes you to the Nebula Weekend Photo Gallery at the Midamericon Fan Photo Archive. Some good pics, and it's nice to see that the latest issue of the the SFWA Bulletin made it in time to the banquet ceremony.

Cheers!
