There's a certain hush....al over the world...this morning....

It's a fearful, dreadful hush. When Kurtz uttered that haunted refrain, "The horror....the horror!" this is what he was talking about:

BLACK FRIDAY.

This time I'm not going into the heart of darkness. I instead will hover about the edges, blow on my hands to keep them warm, and utter a bleak little prayer for the souls within.

In other words, I'm just take a friend who needs a new washer-dryer set. I'm staying in the car. No way am I going in. I did that once.

Once.

A few years ago I was curious to see what all the fuss was about. I chose a random Wal*Mart and saw people at their consumer-worst. I was one of the ones who dutifully waited in line, in tghe cold and dark, and then saw as the doors were opened the host of others who exited cars and descended upon those doors with no regard for the souls who waited the hard, honest way. The fights. The jamming of people. The cops.

The holiday season shouldn't be about shedding blood. That's what Easter is supposed to be about.

So I learned my lesson once. But observer of people that I am, I readily agreed to ferry another poor soul to the sacrifical pyre. I can be a real voyeuristic m*therf*cker.

Thanksgiving went off very well. Good food. Lots of it. And not too many leftovers. My brother Andrew came by and we had a very nice meal. My homemade pumpkin pie was a success. As was my homemade cranberry bread. Everything, I might also add, was dairy-free. Advances in food tech mean that things like soy butter and soy milk actually work as reasonable substitutes. I was pleased. Lots of cooking and cleaning, but 'twas all worth it. I, needless to say, napped soundly afterwards.

Short entry this morning as I need to gear up for the morning's adventure. In that spirit, I offer up what Snopes.com has to say about Black Friday.

Enjoy!
