Here's a hint as to what I face as a teacher adopting, with a union and a strict board office:

I was informed today by a Human Resources person to not ask questions regarding adoption paperwork or maternity leave until I have officially notified the Board Office that I am taking maternity leave. She then told me that she would keep my information (i.e., that I'm adopting) confidential as long as I contact other people directly, instead of through her.

So there. So much for getting anything done.
