First day of week-long Soc. Studies Institute, and I'm all fired up. Also received letter from principal re: some changes at school, plus a phone call to me personally regarding a change in my rooming - I will now have half a room! One teacher will be there 1-4th hours, and I will finish up there 5 & 6 hours. Of course, this is the room right next door to my old one... the one I moved out of completely, packed up, hauled off to storage, and put the rest in the office downstairs.... that I can now haul back upstairs.... not that I'm complaining.

Anyway, here's some interesting, thought-provoking questions out of today's Institute. Keep in mind that although there may be simple rebuttal statements, there's really not based on the readings and knowledge discussed today. So after we learn for 2 days, we'll then figure out how to transfer these lessons to eighth graders. Please discuss amongst yourselves:

1. Parliament was justified in taxing the Colonists for the upkeep of troops in America during/after the French & Indian War.

2. Unfair taxation was the cause of the American Revolution.

3. Boston caused the American Revolution.

4. The Revolution would never have gained support from the masses if Thomas Paine had not printed "Common Sense."

5. The Founding Fathers believed all men were created equal.

6. Does liberty mean the same now, as it did in the 1770s?

7. The new government, post-Revolution, was a government based upon the consent of the governed.

8> Was the Revolution a "revolution"?

Hmmm. The boy did well his first day of full-time daycare. Got tired early, slept 1-1/2 hours, but made it almost cheerfully to 7pm tonight.
