Teaching Methods Evolve Yet Again

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Start of a new week. Just dozed off for two or so hours again. Has to do with the fact that my roommate and I stayed up till around 1am just talking before we both started sleeping.

Showed my students one episode from Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, The Lives of the Stars. It’s actually been a year or so since I last viewed this. The material has been out for twenty plus years now, and is terribly dated.

Despite the fact that I had guide questions that were supposed to have the students’ attention on what the guy on the screen was saying, they only alerted themselves to key words, and when they missed the references, would ask for the video to be rewound. On the next class, when I alerted them to the fact that the answer to one of the questions was coming up, that was the only time they’d pay attention, and would be talking most of the time.

Looking at Carl Sagan’s website, they released a “Best of Cosmos” show just a few years ago, which means that even they found that only a few parts survived comprehension of present audiences without CGI to accompany the vocals. In fact, most likely for next term I’ll just be discussing the topic instead of showing that video again. I believe I’ll have an easier time relaying the concepts to my students than that.
