People and Things Where They Are Expected To Be

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Second overnight in a row. I just woke up from a nap, the first time I’ve taken a siesta in five sleepovers in the past two weeks. I slept at 2am today after trying to organize my files on no less than five computers in the department. It’s a good thing all of the PCs are linked so I can manage it from just one terminal. It’s not recommendable to just put all one’s documents in one hard disk though and access them from all the computers, because every once in a while one of the computers here gets pulled out for maintenance by the Information Technology Center, and that’s a minimum of one week that the computer will be gone.

So in the course of five years (I have files going all the way back to 1998, although some of the files in my isolated computer in the Observatory go earlier than that) I have managed to create several ant farms of storage between the computers here.

It was also recently that I realized not all the computers have all the same files. So that’s why I’m trying to rectify that, hopefully finishing before the new schoolyear starts.

I just talked to one of the panelists of the students who had their thesis oral defense yesterday. According to her, the students got a passing grade with only minor revisions.

While I was in the lab earlier today two people inquired about how to get the keys for the equipment that they had arranged with the technician in charge there (who hadn’t gotten in yet earlier). One was from the chemistry labs who approached me in the hall, and another was someone who just called trying to reserve the use of the electron microscope.

I had to turn them down saying despite the fact that I was the person in the lab at that moment, I was there on other business and not really in charge. The one on the phone even wanted to know if there was someone else assigned to do it when the technician is absent, and I told him even if there was, I was the only person in the room at that time, and had been for the past three hours since 8am, so I really couldn’t help him. I had to tell both of them to call again either this afternoon or tomorrow, when someone else might be there more familiar with the laboratory’s operations.
