Students Asking To Change Subjects For A New Reason

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

And for today we have another academic adviser’s anecdote, courtesy of being the only faculty among the advisers who is still showing up in school and therefore I get to meet with all the students who are only going for this enrollment procedure just now.

This was Tillie, an engineering freshman (incoming sophomore now), who sometime in the middle of the school year shifted to communication arts, but before the term was over, shifted back (or withdrew her application, whichever was allowed).

Again, just like Ray a few days ago, this one had already enlisted online (entered her subjects in her school account) and been assessed (gotten her statement of accounts of tuition and fees based on the number of units and which had computer fees and laboratory fees).

But she returned with her mother because despite her original advising schedule for which she got nineteen units, she could not take two subjects because of conflicts. Therefore she ended up with just thirteen.

And just as I had kept insisting on these students before, they should take as many units as possible during their early terms while the tuition is relatively lower. At least the parents, especially those with educational plans, understand this perfectly.

The problem was that with the sections already enlisted, there really were no other subjects she could take. But going the extra mile and looking at the other sections she could take, she would be able to get in her Filipino One class is she took a different section in Electricity and Magnetism lecture. She also had to take a different section in the lab subject and in her physical education team sports.
It was like a stack of dominoes falling one after the other after some chips had been replaced to get them all in a row.

There was only one section of Introduction to Sociology, so we really could not find a replacement section for that. But seeing the other possible subjects she could take, Engineering Material Science was free, and with the proper prerequisites taken. So we got her back to nineteen units, provided that the Registrar’s office allowed her to change sections.

Besides that, her mother was also complaining about her child being behind in her mathematics subjects. This is because there is no Integrated Calculus class being offered for the coming term.

For the mechanics lecture and lab classes, I have already told the trailing engineering students to give up on it because according to the Dean, there is no free lab with the third year high school students using it.

But for the Calculus class, it would be easy enough to find them a classroom and an available faculty with at least two new math teachers being hired part time.

It is just a matter of gathering the minimum number of students, who would commit to enrolling in that subject in a formal letter. I had already given the suggestion to another student before, and I told Tilly to contact her to see about the status of their petition. The mother even offered to write the letter for them.

And I’m done with session number 589. Class dismissed.
