Conflicts: Between Students and Parents, and Teachers and Concessionaires

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

There is a slight hitch with regards to our meals for the Leadership Camp and the Science and Outdoor Camp. Student Affairs director Sir Ronnie had requested sample menus from the exclusive school concessionaire for the next three years, but they did not come up with one as fast as the outside caterer did. So Sir Ronnie went with the outside prices when he requested for the food budget from the Dean.

But when the in house concessionaire saw the outside caterer representative go to the school to talk with Sir Ronnie, they complained about “breach of contract”.

Since the Dean is out of the country from two days ago until May 15, it was the director of the Administrative Services that had to take care of the matter. The school cafeteria will provide their own menu on the next working day, and they have to be within the already approved budget for 5 meals and 6 snacks.

Of course, the students, who are not satisfied with the quality of the food offered (indispensability always has its drawbacks, and on the part of those who need the services as opposed to the ones offering the services), know the loophole that they can always bring their own food from outside for their own consumption. In fact, for the two evening meals during the camp they are even planning on having an outside barbeque.

There is also an ongoing case right now in the guidance counselor’s office between two students who both lay down money to rent a house in one of the nearby subdivisions.

Constantine, even though he no longer slept at the house, still paid part of the share of the rent after a couple of months. The lease was also under his name.

There were supposed to be two other students who were going to take Constantine’s place, but they backed out, leaving the first student, Franco, hanging.

The problem is that Franco’s mom has stepped in, and as soon as she saw Constantine in school, harangued him at the entrance to the building, unmindful of several people witnessing the scene. Somehow, it seems, Franco could not clear up the misunderstanding at his mom’s onslaught. Or if he did, his mom may not want to back down anymore because of pride.

So the matter was brought to the guidance counselor’s office to iron out. Good thing for Constantine is that instead of pushing through with a face to face confrontation, which was already scheduled twice, Franco’s mom instead sent a statement by courier, to ensure that it would not be tampered with.

Constantine who filed his own version of the events the next day, sees this as a good thing because they could then not back down from their story and change it as they had done the first time they met.

At least Miss Marj the guidance counselor has already heard the side of the person who coordinates the houses for rent, because her side is completely consistent with what Constantine said, regardless of what Franco did not say to his mom, or what she would not allow him to commit to. Now it’s up to her to arbitrate.

That wraps up session number 590. Ten more till we get to a milestone that I should have announced five times before. Class dismissed.
