Discouraging Students Not Paying Attention to the Lecture

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

In the second meeting of my Engineering Materials Science class for the tenth week of the first term, we finished chapter six about the mechanical properties of metals.

I started with plastic deformation, which I told them was the opposite of an elastic deformation in that its unrecoverable and irreversible.

The analogy that I gave them was of a rubber band or a spring being stretched too far.

I gave them several new equations we're going to use, and at one point Deiv asked if I was going to give them tables for those values. For once his penchant for anticipatory questions didn't serve him right, for there was no table for that part of the topic, but there was one afterwards.

Then we went to the properties themselves: ductility, resilience, toughness and hardness, for which there were different definitions I dictated (to throw off Deiv and his either copy first or copy later and never listen style) along with the equations. Deiv still was slow on paying attention, and even went so far as to borrow my notes, and he couldn't understand my writing! I refused to lend them to him afterwards in the next definition (talk about never learning from a bad experience) since it was using it to discuss the next part of the lesson.

I also gave the symbols for the equations but not the definitions, which again I just told the class. Still he didn't listen, and asked me about them afterwards. I just returned the question to the class instead of answering him.

Still he didn't learn though, and kept asking me, or maybe because it's my job but his classmates consider it tiresome to entertain him about those things.

Since it was not all computations by the way, the class was relatively more relaxed than in the previous lessons, and noisier. I really can't help that, and it's just the problem solving portions that they pay attention to real time.

Next meeting will probably be review and academic advising for the engineering juniors.

Session 1231's attention is still divided. Class dismissed.
