Learner-Centered, Excellence-Centered or Subject-Centered?

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

In my Computer Circuit Fundamentals class, there are some groups that are able to finish exercises faster, while there are those that are slower.

And my policy so far has been that as soon as majority of the groups have finished with the last exercise, that is when I introduce the next one.

Actually if this were a lower batch class or if there were more students I would probably be more strict with the deadline of their exercises with deductions, but they're not, so I'm not.

I thought that they would take more time to catch up after the first two exercises that they were behind. After all, if these were some of the ordinary slackers I have had to deal with, they should have failed in these major subjects terms ago.

But the problem is that as of the moment they are now six exercises behind.

And it's the tenth week of the term, so it may be a little late, as well as indicative of my faith (or lack thereof) in their skills if I shuffle them out into the other groups this late in the game.

What's ironic is that this is one of the groups where some of the members have some dedicated online extracurricular activities where they keep asking me to have the net connection turned on at the computer they're using. Lately I have had to decline until they show me that they have finished at least a third of the exercises they still owe me.

And now I'm at the point where I have to decide whether to give the entire class more exercises (and pile more work on top of the stragglers), or to wait for them to finish, and let the others stay idle during the time we spend in the computer lab.

Another consideration is that since this is already the latter part of the term, that means the next topics are more complicated and need the foundation of comprehension of the previous topics. So since I have a certain number of topics that I need to fulfill with them, I can't give them too much time to learn some concepts.

Session 1405 has the pressure on. Class dismissed.
