The Tenuous Grounds of Class Schedules In the First Two Weeks of the Term

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Two proposals for change of classes happened within this week, one from me, another from the students, that may have to take into effect either on the third or fourth week of the term.

The first one was about my general science requirement mechanics laboratory classes, which right now have around twenty five students each because of the seniors who only wish they'd graduate on time - otherwise they would have planned ahead and not taken these subjects after so long a postponement.

I realized the two classes can be divided into three sections of around seventeen students each. I suggested that to the acting dean yesterday, and she agreed, saying that the Integrated School is only using the lab on Thursday and Friday mornings anyway. It will still be up to me to get all of the students' schedules though and see who could be moved where - which is actually how change of schedule is supposed to go, not because some student asked for it, then suggests either to the teacher or the dean (because there is no protocol on who decides and when - such as the first week of classes, and there should be)the new days and time.

Next was the (mostly) regular sophomore engineering students in my Electromagnetic Theory class. Their idea was that we should just have one three-hour session every week, since our discussions are so extensive anyway that it takes about half the period to solve one problem. I think it also has something to do with the fact that I give an exercise at the end of each period, and they would rather have just one exercise a week rather than what we have right now.

Since the class was already moved from another date and time, I don't know about the feasibility of this, and if both of our schedules will allow it. But it is something to think about for next term: that theory-heavy subjects can just meet once a week, provided the students don't complain about mental overload during the more involved topics, as well as counting sections to open based on the number of students who listed such a subject during academic advising.

Session 1485 is thinking of less work for themselves. Class dismissed.
