The First Day of Classes Is Just A Suggestion?

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

First day of the new term and the new school year, and I've already had to process academic advising for half a dozen people. It's a bit frustrating that for a couple of them, I had marked their curriculum folders with “Final – no conflict” yet here they were returning because there was a conflict in schedule.

So much for letting them perform the task of deciding on their schedule themselves.

There really are times when you still have to lead students by the hand, even when you tell them to leave the nest (mixing my metaphors) and fly on their own.

Is it going to come down to a case to case basis of how I handle their situations?

There already was at least one student who showed up, declared that he was under-loaded with only eleven units enrolled, and just waited for what I was going to do.

I should be glad that the engineering students are here today when it's not so hectic, instead of tomorrow when probably most of the business administration and communication arts students will be going after the same thing (and believe me, the sense of planning of the people taking those courses – maybe it is culturally enforced – is worse, but they're not any less demanding).

Other minor concerns include the secretary finally putting her foot down in that no “old” faculty will be moving to the vacated cubicles by those moving to the engineering faculty room, except for the two who were in the directors' offices for last term, and the director of the school of engineering taking matters into his own hands manually rearranging the cubicles in the new room, since he discovered they were not to his original specifications, which he may or may not have been informed, was revised by the then Executive Vice President.

The E V P is now in Germany until July, so there may be reprimands only at that time.

Speaking of which, the E V P sent an e-mail last week reminding the teachers about the social contract with the students on the first day of classes about how their grades will be computed, as well as keeping the thirteenth week of classes free of all major requirements (not just exams but also stage productions).

Will that mean it will now be the twelfth week that will be crowded with activities?

He also set the exemption grade to be 3.5 and no lower.

Session 1633 wants the teachers to do all the work. Class dismissed.
