A Student Still Refusing to Learn In Some Aspects

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Had my second exam in my engineering assembly language class today.

It was closed notes; there were fifty questions, most of which were identification.

First nine questions were the standard how are the registers affected by the four fundamental mathematical operations.

From there it was enumeration of string commands and their operation, one "complete the code for a specified task" portion, and lastly, determining the relationship of the original operands if the values of the affected flags after are given.

Sadly, even the class topnotcher was a bit stumped (coming from a practical point of view) that he didn't know a certain category of commands I was asking for, even though I did list it down during the lecture). He knew how to use them, not their listing.

As for a certain student, his questions at this time could be split into two: rewording the instructions and asking if that's what's being asked for (which I staved off by repeating the line about writing down your assumptions) and second was looking for certain hints about the answers to some questions.

Also, the instructions specifically said number the first page of their test booklet first in two columns, yet he answered the first question first and filled up the entire first line of the paper, then asked me what he was going to do about it.

His suggestion: one column, one page. While he was still talking, I folded his paper into two and told him to number the paper first, even if his second column started on the second line.

Session 2427 just realizes if this guy is going to work outside his dad's lab after graduation (or whenever he leaves this school) he won't last weeks in most companies. Class dismissed.
