Behavior Modification Put Nicely

Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

First work day of the new month. Two meetings ambushed me today, when I thought I’d have a lot of free time for “other” work.

The first one was for the Office of Student Affairs student formation track for next school year.

First major change is that the freshmen orientation will now be two days instead of the previous one day.

There will now also be refresher courses for the sophomore to junior students, in the form or an informal coffee round table.

The personality seminars which will be for the students now have an acronym that means linkage.

For the first year students, the theme of the seminars will be about self knowledge and self worth.

For the second year students, it will be about whether or not they are in the right career path, and study habits.

For the third year, it will not be about themselves but about others, as they start to help the community including the public school scholars and the freshmen in a required peer mentoring program.

Of course for the fourth year students, it will be on preparing for OJT interviews, resume writing etc.

What I didn’t understand was why the head of the mission office, in charge of retreats and recollections, wanted the non-academic unit to be placed in the flowchart for his sessions to be separate from those of personality development and formation, even though it will be easier to manage.

I didn’t press the issue, although it seemed easier to require the students to complete one non-academic subject per year with several components than two with fewer meetings which both have a point-five unit credit each.

Also, since the seminars will be spread out over the school year at the rate of two per term and they are required to attend three at least, that means that it will take them more than one term to finish all the requirements, but they have to enroll in it during the first term. That means giving the grade will have to be deferred, like with the thesis subjects, only the second such to be allowed.

Naturally this will have to pass with the school directors first, the registrar’s office and the board of trustees.

But if all goes well, the three year spiritual formation of the students will have been completely expanded to four years, and covering non-religious aspects of their character building as well, and will be well attended because of the grade (just pass or fail) requirement attached.

Session 2539 wishes that this job could be delegated to others as well, but only someone competent. Class dismissed.
