Grading How to Persuade the Teacher?

Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Appropriate to what I was talking about yesterday, in today's astronomy lab class (which is a phrase I can only utter now, not before) I was surprised with the request of some of the students, who are still in their first year.

They asked, during our start-of-the-period quiz that is ten points and ten minutes and as mentioned during the first meeting is about the experiment of the previous session, if they could look at their notes for one minute after having seen the questions. And they were serious; it wasn't a joke!

I don't know whether this is something that they had gotten used to in the high school years or here.

I'm suspecting it's here, as there is a rumor going around of one teacher in the business major classes who calls it a "gift" he gives the class to step out for five minutes in the middle of a quiz or exam where they are free to look at their notes, or worse, copy from their classmates, even grabbing their papers.

I think that should be in the past tense, as I don't know if that teacher is still here.

If this is what learner-centered education is all about, giving the students every opportunity to get a passing grade in the subject and saying that it's something to be proud of, when in fact they will flounder and fail when it comes to the workplace with that kind of attitude, then count me out of its bandwagon.

@@ Some people cannot distinguish the line between an employer and a friend.

It's only now that I'm seeing that as a person who gets to hire people, they think they can foist on to me all their charity cases and I'd take them in because we were once close.

The fact that first and foremost, getting good employees who will increase business is my concern seems to escape them, or is something that they put lower than helping those in need.

I've had someone contact me on behalf of an applicant, saying he'll stake his name on the person.

There was even a plea to take on any position, even that of security guard.

I hope they're sincere when they say they understand my situation not accepting it.

Session 2543 likes simpler times. Class dismissed.
