Threatening to Be A Bad Day

Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I had one student last term who failed in the astronomy class. As far as I know it wasn't his first time to take the science elective, and he had failed the computational mechanics course before.

He shouldn't have thought that just because it's relatively easier that he doesn't have to put as much effort into it, because he still failed. Just like with some other students he also made the fatal error of comparing his amount of work with some of his classmates who passed.

Therefore he believed he would also pass, which sadly wasn't the case. It also may have been turned around if he had just approached me afterwards, even though I wasn't in school during the giving of course cards. It says something to me when a student just accepts his fate like that, although it also says something else when one who clearly does not deserve to pass is all indignant and incredulous about it.

@@ Earlier we were at a birthday lunch of one of the sophomores. She with her friends just showed up in the faculty room and expected me to go with them right there and then.

They didn't for an instant take into consideration that I might be in the middle of something that although it could be interrupted, would disrupt the flow of thought, or momentum.

And that's exactly what happened. I left the computer logged on and locked to my account, which could only be opened with my password from the screensaver, with the document I was editing still open.

And someone in the faculty who couldn't wait to use it just turned it off at the switch.

It was actually twice that this has happened to me. I'm not saying that they didn't have the right to do what they did, (if this was the f-my-life site I'd probably be getting more "you deserved that one") it's just that when someone does the same thing, I never turn off the computer. I just thought we'd be giving each other here the same consideration.

It was also twice that that "hey, stop what you're doing" attitude happened to me today.

The second was when the college administrative assistant showed up at 3pm for us to play badminton that I had agreed to earlier in the day. I thought it would be at 5pm, just like our usual sessions, but apparently they have the go-ahead from the administration to end their work early today (and tomorrow) to practice for the inter-campus employee sports on Saturday.

Another sort of bad thing that happened was that at that birthday lunch, one of the students who failed in astronomy was present. But, somehow, my co-teacher who taught the lab subject was still able to talk to her. Is it because he told her, "hey, you passed in the lab. It's just your lecture grade that pulled it down to failing"? Nice way to wash hands, if that's the case, although I probably won't ask that.

Session 2667 likes how the rants for today were somewhat interconnected. Class dismissed.
