Too Much Work for Too Little Satisfaction

Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

What was I just talking about yesterday? That game that I was playing, well, it has crossed the borderline between challenging and frustrating. I had reached level 11 out of 15, but I kept dying.

I had bought the best possible weapon (which I had mentioned yesterday was prone to failure) and there were several new options for armor available for me, up to 60,000 credits, of which I only had the 20,000 version.

Maybe that was part of why I kept dying. Maybe it was because I needed to under-clock my machinery.

It had gotten to the point where as long as my heat level was in yellow (about 25%) I already went for cooling down, but it was not enough. Every once in a while I would still die from breaking down.

And add to that that I was getting deducted 10% of my experience points every time I died, so I was down to around 50% of what I needed to advance to the next level, meaning around 5 days more worth of game play – that is, assuming I did not die again but just kept steadily fighting.

So thing morning I finally gave it up. It was too much. Being the robot was fun at first, and maybe it was a new rollout which was why they had not gotten the kinks out, but I cannot stay and find by trial and error what I’m supposed to do to be able to get the character to level up as is.

Besides, having the game reset the day every four hours made it worse than the social networks in wanting to get the most out of game play, checking every once in a while for topped of stamina and hit points.

It was nice while it lasted, but now I can concentrate my efforts on other games that I am close to finishing, such as Legend of the Five Rings on the book of face, and provides more diverse enjoyment.

@@ My students in robotics lecture and lab had the preliminary presentation of their proposal earlier.

It was short, about 15 minutes. They only had statement of the problem, and for the theory it was vague on the sensors.

For the methodology they actually presented two possible ways that they could implement their project.

What they want, by the way, is a camera connected to motion sensors in a room such that the camera follows whatever is moving.

I discouraged them from including in the applications that it can be used in a crowded room, because that would involve having image recognition software to weed out all the objects moving in the room to focus on the right one.

I also told them to do comparative costing on the typical systems with several cameras in each corner of the room, the one with the swerving base, and one that can be controlled by a security guard.

They should be able to show that their system is more advantageous than what are now in the market, and with better results.

In other words, they should be prepared for every possible question from the panel.

Session 2877 wants the weekend to start now. Class dismissed.
