Not Out of the Woods Yet

Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.
Today I had to grade another paper, actually a slide presentation given by a certain student, although it is supposed to be group work with a partner, only his name appeared in the file name.

It was only two slides long. It gave the summary of what they believed would be sufficient information for the client (the sports development office personnel) then a conclusion in the second slide.

Both were in paragraph form. I had to give them an additional assignment of looking up the rules for proper technical slide presentations, about providing diagrams, tables and computations.

I also had to remind them that this is not a revise, submit then repeat process until the end of the term.

By the weekend they are supposed to be buying the materials already, and should be utilizing their lab time fully.

During one of our last meetings, they were also supposed to be analyzing the workings of a binary cell.

I had them draw the diagrams on the chalkboard, then work out the binary outputs from the inputs.

His classmate and group mate (there are only two students in this apparently special class) was the one who filled out the truth table on the board, while he was more concerned with copying it in his notebook.

Due to this, his classmate was the one who got the high grades in recitation. He only had one answer, to a true or false type question, and he got that wrong too, so there is no grade for that one.

Now there is another lecture slash analysis session. I wonder if he will be more participative here, but then the topic is more difficult, and asks them to draw on previous knowledge, not just from last meeting.

Also, he bragged about having brought his own copy of the textbook, albeit a later edition. So when he wanted to find the same topic in the new book, what did he do? He checked the same page number.

Then he complained to me that he couldn't find it. I had to tell him to refer to the topic and chapter title instead.

Even his former classmates all pity his group mate. I know it is a job only a saint and a martyr can withstand.

And now he seems to be counting scores from all our previous works, just because I gave him the grade breakdown in the syllabus.

He even thought the first library research was just a diagnostic, where he was only able to answer the first of five questions.

And after we discussed it in class and repeated the topic, he asked if it would be added to the previous research. Of course it is not.

They are not freshmen. In fact most of his batch mates have graduated already. The mother tells all the personnel at the enrollment office, since the start to please be patient with him.

Session 2923 rediscovered old bad habits. Class dismissed.
