2005-11-27 6:30 AM A Midwest Thanksgiving Previous Entry :: Next Entry Mood: Tired Read/Post Comments (1) So, here I am, at 6:30 in the morning on a Sunday, on a borrowed computer, north of Indianapolis. How did I get here? Well, some old friends, Morgi and T'Pau(real names changed to protect the not-so-innocent), thought it would be a neat idea for us all to get together for the holiday, since we hadn't all been together for a few years. It was decided that since I was on the west coast, and T'Pau was on the east coast, that it would be simplest to meet in the middle, where Morgi lives. So, after some quick planning, and later some quick scrambling after my original flight home was cancelled, we made all of our arrangements. There was much angsting over my leaving my sweetie for the majority of a week, but in the end, it was probably better that we learn to handle being apart anyway. I caught my flight out Wednesday night, and arrived at the Indianapolis airport bright-eyed and bushy-tailed(no, not really) at 6 in the morning Indiana time. I walked out to the bus stop for the car rental shop, and waited. And waited. And waited...and finally got fed up with sitting in the freezing wind, and called. What I found out was that the shuttle wouldn't start running until 7AM, when the rental office opened. Despite the fact that every other company was running their shuttles even though they weren't open yet. And despite the fact that there was a sign at the rental counter in the airport that simply said the counter was closed, go wait outside for the shuttle. Eventually, the shuttle did come, and I was able to pick up my rental, although not the way I thought I would. My credit card company, in their infinite lack of wisdom, managed to put through a finance charge timed exactly right to prevent the company from accepting my card to hold the rental. Fortunately, my credit is still good enough that they accepted my debit card, although that did mean that I'm going to spend cash I didn't actually have to spend. *sigh* I managed to find my way to Morgi's house, only getting lost a few times, and got to see two of my closest friends for the first time in years. Good lord, have I missed them. There are certain people in your life who can remind you within moments of seeing them again just how important they are to you. I got to see two of them again this weekend. We didn't really do a whole lot on Thursday, I think in part because I was somewhat wiped out from the redeye flight. We did a little shopping, and hung around the house and watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory(well, the first half) and Earth Girls are Easy. Morgi made a really nice tuna casserole (with oyster crackers!) for dinner, and we generally just kicked back and chilled out. On Friday, since Morgi had to work, T'Pau and I went into Indianapolis proper and went to the zoo. It's a fairly small zoo, and most of the animals were off exhibit because of the cold, so, unfortunately, it was probably a waste of money. We did get to see lions and tigers and bears (Oh my!!!), along with sea lions, seals, fish, snakes, penguins, puffins, and a few wild dogs. Oh, and a golden tamarind (very cute). After the zoo, we heading back towards Morgi's , and stopped to see Rent, at T'Pau's suggestion. Very powerful movie. Made me bawl. I suppose that means I should actually listen to the whole Broadway show now, and try to see a production, to get the parts I missed in the movie. We made a quick stop by Fry's (the easternmost Fry's in the U.S.!) to pick up a wired router so that T'Pau and I could both go online at the same time without tying up Morgi's computer, and headed back in for the evening. Saturday was cooking day, since we were having our not quite Thanksgiving Day feast that night. Amazingly enough, I actually helped out some around the kitchen, albeit clumsily, and I got to watch food be prepared and cooked, which is always entertaining, and occasionally informative. We had turkey (duh), orange-cranberry sauce, green beans, mashed potatos, rolls, gravy, and a pumpkin pie for dessert. It was quite yummy. T'Pau and I decided that since she had to be at the airport around 5AM for her flight this morning, that it made sense to mostly just stay up and chill until leaving for the airport around 4. We both napped a little anyway, which was smart, since I think I would have been a total wreck on the way back from the airport otherwise. T'Pau made sure she had her stuff together, and we wandered off to the airport. I dropped her off, headed back to the house, and here I am, wide awake, at 7AM on a Sunday morning, with very little to do, except think. I already miss T'Pau. She means a lot to me, and it sucks that we didn't have that much time together. It also didn't help that neither one of us was in our natural habitat, so we didn't really have any idea what to do around here when we were hanging out. We don't get to see each other often enough, and I'm so bad about correspondence, and journaling, and being on instant messenger that I turn into a bit of a hermit without meaning to. Oh well, I guess I just have to be better about it, don't I? I don't really know what the battle plan for today is, if any. Obviously, I have to wait for Morgi to arise, and then I can figure out if we're doing anything in particular today. I hope so, just because I can spend time on the internet at home, too, but it depends on how she feels, since she's fighting off a cold or somesuch. I miss Pita, I miss our cats, and I miss home. Unfortunately, due to the airline stuff in the second paragraph, I'm here until Tuesday morning, instead of Monday, so I have to find something to do on Monday, and I don't get to see my sweetie for two more days. How's that for an update? Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
