sexism at sunday school

We had a very nice meeting with Rose's Sunday school teacher. She told us about the curriculum. Mostly they'll be learning the holidays with a few other topics added in. Those include Jonah, Noah, Daniel, David, Joseph, and Moses.

I can understand leaving out Bathsheba who bathed on the rooftop naked (that hussy) and Jepthah's daughter who ended up, well, dead, by her father. But there's not a handmaiden, a judge, not one measly matriarch in the bunch.

Maybe the men get all the glory because they've got animals with them. I mean it's fun to read about whales and lions. I can't see why else Daniel made the cut.

Of course, I'm going to have to talk to the teacher about this. I'm going to have to be polite and understanding. I'm sure you had no intention of making women invisible in our cultural heritage. I'm sure you understand the importance of teaching children that women too have lead our people, struggled with ethics, sacrificed themselves, and rejoiced in being Jewish. And yes, I know we'll be hearing all about Queen Esther during Purim.

I can't seem to stop being snide. Maybe because I can't believe I have to have this conversation. I thought the seventies feminists fought this one for me. I thought we could move on to deeper more complex issues about gender, like the problem with history by hero. But no. When I heard the sexist teacher at daycare, I spoke up. It looks like I'm going to be speaking up a lot.
