dad: You need to read 10 more pages. How many pages have you read?
kid: I'm almost at page 62.
dad: And how many pages do you need to read by Tuesday?
kid: 30.
dad: So, if you read 10 pages a day, you will have it done by Tuesday. I don't want you to have to try at the last minute.
kid: uh huh.
dad: You need to read 10 more pages. How many pages have you read?

They went through this at least four times while I was there. The poor dad was trying to be supportive, logical, clear on the rules, and not driven insane by the kid constantly stopping the book. The poor kid was bored, frustrated, put upon, and not happy to be in conflict with dad but not eager to read the book.

I wanted to say, cut the knot. Just don't do the homework. Forcing a kid to read x number of pages is not going to make them a better reader or instill a love of reading. Parents and kids have enough issues to fight about, why add this one?
