working with different metaphors

I'm at the park and David has just climbed up the ladder, gone across the bouncy/swingy bridge, and climbed up to the platform. That's all good. But then he's heading to the leap into space onto the fire pole which is not good at all because I am blocking the parallel bars escape hatch and would not get there in time if David decided to try his hand at the pole. So I say "No, David. Get away from the edge."

I'm not moving particularly quickly because there's a daddy standing right where I would have needed to be and I figured he would be helpful in necessary. Sure enough, once David steps back, the daddy and I smile and make eye contact. He is young, tall, and has a marine haircut. He says, "I'm working the zone defense."

It takes me a moment, but I get it. I've played a teeny bit of basketball. It's a great metaphor. It makes perfect sense. And I'm really tired of "It takes a village."
