On the way to Rainier, we stopped at the Pioneer Farm Museum.
I've seen a lot of things like this in Children's Museums made out of plastic and huge replica villages with everyone in period costume and full of stories. This one wasn't huge, but it was my all time favorite because they let you try everything. In the house, they told us all about how the kids had to grate the cinnamon for the apple pies, and it would take half an hour to get enough cinnamon for one pie and Ma would make five in a day. They showed us how to grind corn, heat the curling iron in the oil lamp, and move the clothes through the ringer. Then they let the kids loose to try everything. There must have been 40 different things to try out in that house from carding wool to the stereoscope pictures.

But wait, that's not all. From there, we went to the barn, the blacksmith's shop, and the woodworking shed. Yes, they were going to let our kids pound real glowing metal horse shoes. We nixed that idea. But we did let them pull the hand saw, milk the cow, hunt for eggs, jump in the hay barn and on and on.

Next time I hope the Ohop Indian Village is open as well.
