David's birthday party

Ahoy their mateys! David had a pirate/airplane themed birthday, and it went great.

About a week ago, David and I had a really good visit to Display and Costume, our local store for everything tacky, ridiculous, and flamboyant. They also have plates and balloons. After we picked out our bouquet of balloons, including three black ones with pirates on them, I wanted to head straight to the pirate section. Not so fast says David. We've got to go up and down every aisle and see every last sequined thing. And why not? We landed in pirate land eventually, and I managed not to buy the plastic swords and the giant skull and cross bones but still feel delighted and ridiculous about the amount of kitsch I obtained. We used it all.

We started with pin the flag on the treasure map. David cheated of course. He's not ready for games with rules, but none of the other kids had fits at him, and we didn't have a prize, so not very high stakes. Then, we had our big event—the treasure hunt. We divided the kids into three groups and gave them clues that sent them running around outside the house. The clues turned out to be just the right level--easy, but not absolutely blatant. Like you knew you were looking for the Christmas tree, but where was it? Rose helped design one of the treasure hunts, and she had a really good time making up rhymes for the clues.

We told the kids to stick together and make sure everyone in the group had a job, and, oh my goodness, they did it. A big kid read the clue, another kid carried them, another got to pick them up. I was stunned by the cooperation and kindness they showed.

The treasure was pirate blowers which broke immediately, pirate tattoos, which were a huge hit, and Hannukah gelt. What a deal! We accidentally overbought for Hannukah and then could pass out this shiny gold and silver candy.

We moved on to the airplane part of theme, making "The Swashbuckler" and then white cake with pink icing (David's choice) and lots and lots of ice cream. The party officially ended at 4:00. About half the kids went home then and the other half played outside with the new stomp rocket while the adults happily chatted. A really good party.
