I had David all day today. I volunteered to drive and chaperone the school field trip, so there went my morning to write. Then Rose had yoga after school, so we didn't have the 3:30 pick up to punctuate our afternoon and give it form and meaning. And, of course, it was pointless to suggest that we go swimming. I knew once we were home, David wasn't going to leave the house. Rattle, rattle, rattle.

It all went well.

The kids in Kangaroo room wanted to learn about airplanes. So, they've been hearing books about airplanes, and making paper airplanes, and touching actual airplane parts, and today, we went on a field trip to see a real seaplane. As tours go, it was pretty impressive. We got to see where they fix the engines and watch them rivet on the skin. We saw a plane launched into the water and another one get ready to take off. We saw where the gas goes. Then each kid got to sit in the pilot's chair and turn the wheel. Managing David and my other two charges went fine. They didn't jump in the lake or fondle sharp objects. But it was cold, and David would burst into loud verses of the Bloody Red Baron as I was driving. I wonder what the other kids thought of this.

Back home, I had the first part of the schedule down pat--lunch, clean up, t.v./my nap. It was the next three hours I didn't know what to do with. We went to the library Tuesday and Wednesday. We went shopping Thursday. We ended up doing the laundry, cleaning the bathroom, and playing Peter Pan. While I scrubbed, David got out all the stuffed animals and assigned them roles. The cheetah (many of you have met Erisabeth the cheetah) was Mrs. Darling, David's bear got to be Captain Hook, and a red pen with a piece of paper taped to it for the shadow was Peter Pan. I would have gone with the random object for Tinker Bell, but David was in charge. We had a cast of ten characters and never got around to assigning the lost boys. The game was mostly about the set up because I was fading hard when I had to actually voice several pirates.

Then I had a cup of caffeinated tea, and we colored. David has been doing a lot of coloring recently. Last week I went through the art box throwing out about half of it and reviving the other half. Today we colored math designs from a book John created.

I pointed out to David that we were having David/Mommy time. He seemed very pleased by the notion. The gentle reader might be aware that we have David/Mommy time at least three hours a day, but David hadn't seemed to realize this.
