hauling David around town

I really felt guilty about David's yesterday. Normally, I'll ask him to run one errand with me, not constant ones. Luckily, he didn't seem to notice nothing about yesterday was for him.

John and David drove Rose to drama camp because I had an early morning massage, which I had to cancel when my massage therapist and I (hi Jane!) realized I could be contagious.

Five minutes after David walked in the door he had to hop in my car for the drive to my doctor. He seemed to think it was all a great treat--riding the elevator, playing with the toys in the waiting room, playing with the blood pressure cuff--and I'll grant you it was a really quick visit, but I didn't even get to read him any of the books we brought.

Then we rushed home where he happily played by himself while I made lunches because 20 minutes later we were hopping in the car once again to attend Rose's drama camp last day sharing performance. David and I went to this the previous two years, and it was a disaster. It's 45 minutes of kids doing a little play and showing their movement exercises. He squiggled, whined, and I finally had to haul him out right as it was Rose's turn. That was before obviously. This time he paid attention and I mean really paid attention. When the movement teacher called out "Be water in the ocean." David said, "I see a tidal wave." Later he told me when the movement teacher said to make a shape like a leaf, he thought the kids were going to make shapes with the leaves. He says he doesn't want to take drama, but I wonder.

We had lunch in the Center House where I refused to buy him ice cream, candy, or milk shakes. Note to self: don't eat lunch in the Center House of Sweet Temptations. Then came my favorite conversation of the day.

David: I want to watch Star Wars.
Rose: I don’t want to watch Star Wars. What about Word Girl or Arthur?
David: I don't want Word Girl. Let's watch Arthur.
Rose: I'll set it up and put on the timer. Mommy, you go take your nap.

After my nap, I had a popsicle and David had chocolate ice cream, so I guess there was one event focused on him, but then we took Rose to her playdate, and he and I went shopping at Fred Meyer for one hour and 15 minutes which is one hour too long in Fred Meyer. He was a trooper. We had to buy supplies for Rose's overnight camp that's coming up Monday (Yes, she's going to Camp Sealth for the very first time. If you want to send her a postcard, send me an email, and I'll give you the address.), and we needed to pick up my strep meds. I also had promised David a new comb. David has gotten very into combing his hair, especially when he can paste it down with lots of detangler. He managed to pick out a birthday present for Marlyn without going nuts over all the toys he would like. Really, he was perfectly sane and helpful while I was falling apart. I did give him a quarter to ride the horse because this was a day in need of a special treat.

We got home and I could not get off the couch and take him to the farmer's market to play on the slides with Marlyn.

Our day got more normal after that. He played with Daddy. A friend dropped off a box of hand-me-down clothes for him, so we had a fashion show--all baseball shirts and sports shorts. It was block party night, so he and Rose rode their bicycles up and down the street.

I'm sure David wouldn't call is a loser of a day but just half an hour of pretending to be Hans Solo and Luke Skywalker while we chased storm troopers together would have made me feel better.
