A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle

I'm reading it to both the kids. This involves a lot of questions: What happened to her father? What's a tesseract? Who is Calvin? Luckily, the book answers most of the questions. By reading it aloud, I'm noticing more of the craft, and it is worth it.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Rose's teacher is reading this to them at school. Rose already read it last month, so she has to refrain herself from giving things away. Explaining Mary's attitude to the Indian servants is so complicated. Do I start with the history of British Imperialism or the history of hatred and denigration based on skin color?

The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon I mean Noel by Ellen Raskin

We have the shelves of kids' books, and then we have the shelves of books John and I owned and read when we were slightly older than Rose. This was on the slightly older shelf. I think it's an ok book. You can kind of get the humor as a kid, and if you are really clever, which I am not, you can figure out the mystery. Rose seems to be having fun with it. I think The Westing Game by the same author is a brilliant book, but definitely too old for Rose.

The Vile Village, A Series of Unfortunate Events #7 by Lemony Snicket

I'm afraid to say I have not read any Lemony Snicket. Rose's teacher put them in book clubs at school, and hers read the first Lemony Snicket book. She and Cora had to swear to only read two chapters a night and write questions for each other. Each chapter ended in a cliff hanger, so this was torture for Rose. She got so hooked on the books that she is reading the entire series.
