David's Lego birthday party

On the way to school this morning David announced, "I feel special!" I felt so good. I mean I don't want raise self-centered, egotistical children who are overly impressed with their self-worth, but David was referring to his birthday party. It made him feel special. That means it was a success.

Leading up to the party, we had that stressful time where David couldn't decide what he wanted to do for his birthday. And then a little more stress when I couldn't decide which venue to go with, but the Lego party at Math 'n Stuff all got settled before the holidays hit. David also wanted to invite everyone he knew, but I cut the list back to current male friends; a dozen people came.

Thursday, David and I raced out the fabulous party supply store and got cups and plates (black), balloons ordered (black, yellow, brown, and black), and managed not to whine for everything in the store.

Sunday morning David told everyone at Sunday school his birthday party plans. We raced home to get ready. I have never seen David get ready for anything so fast. Cake, check. Cake knife, check. Out the door, check yeah.

The party consisted of Legos. Lots and lots of Legos in big bins. You could build whatever you wanted and then, as the party favor, you got to take home a Lego person that consisted of five different parts and five ounces of Legos. The kids and I were astounded at how many Legos you could get for five ounces. We kept expanding our star ships. Rose had a great time building a prisoner, complete with handcuffs. There was no squabbling over Legos. No melt downs. And when we got to presents, David was delighted by every one of them. John made David a Lego cake which we all praised.

Birthday parties are a very big deal in kid land, and I'm so relieved and pleased this one succeeded.
