field trip to the ballet (again)

I just realized I used the exact same title for our trip last year. Obviously, it is a memorable occasion. This year the 2nd through 5th graders saw excerpts from the ballet, Romeo and Juliette. I got to chaperone 6 lovely 5th graders. These kids really are sweet. Taz and I spent the bus ride chatting about the treasure hunt he is designing for his dad.

Once again, I was more impressed with the setting than the actual dancing. I loved the minimalist set, the use of cloth like another moving body, the costumes, the lighting. Not that there was anything wrong with the dancing, I'm just not a huge ballet fan. The narrator kept giving us places to focus--look what they are doing with their hands, look how heavy or light the movement is given the mood of the piece. That helped. What I really liked was taking time out of my ordinary day and being in the presence of art.
