The City of La Quinta is proclaiming tomorrow, July 4, Bobby Winkles Day, honoring its most heralded resident as he enters the first College Baseball Hall of Fame class.

Winkles, who also coached the A's and managed the Angels, joins other major league standouts Will Clark, Dave Winfield, and Robin "I'm Nolan Ryan's bitch" Ventura. Truly, an honor.

So it's important, as we grill and drink and fly flags and watch fireworks and NBC televised Statue of Liberty/DC specials, that we take a quiet moment to remember what July 4 is all about:

Bobby Winkles.

I talked to the Great Innovator about a month ago, when officials first made the HOF announcement, but I haven't had a chance since to ask what he thinks about all the national hullabaloo. He's a pretty humble "aw shucks" kinda guy, though. I bet that in true Bobby Winkles fashion, he'd just shrug off all the national attention.

And don't know about you, but I, for one, am putting my mit out on the porch tonight, in hopes the Bobby Winkles Fairy leaves a bevy of valuable Topps rookie cards for me to find in the morning.

In other news, Fucking Christ! Enough with this crap, already!
