Today some People bring a little pupling to my house for show. I sniff it. I move on. Poodle feels differently. Poodle loves the pupling and gets excited. I can tell by the way she sets her ears and the focus in her blind eyes. Poodle pokes Pupling with her nose, and Pupling scoots across the floor. Poodle follows. Poodle cannot be diverted. Poodle bores me. I run upstairs to hear what Labrador thinks about it all. Labrador is sleeping. From her dreams, she tells me that Poodle once had puplings of her own, three one year and two a few years later. All of them were taken away from her before she was ready. I listen hard. I can almost hear Poodle’s whimpers. I miss Tiny and the feel of her tongue when she licked my face after she’d fed me. I run back downstairs and watch Poodle watch Pupling go out the door with her People. I bite Poodle’s back leg to take her mind off the leavings. |
