Poodle’s been with us seventeen full moons. She never has gotten the dog door. It seems so simple. On one side, there is my house. On the other side, there is my yard. To get to another, you must go from one. But Poodle has refused. Poodle has stood in my yard in front of the flap that goes to my house, and she has stood there for hours. If she is inside and the flap is down, forget it. Poodle has caused the People to keep the flap open at all times, even when it is freezing outside and all that cold air comes pouring in because otherwise Poodle couldn’t get outside to pee when she needs to, and when it comes to pee, Poodle needs to a lot. It’s her sugar.

We’ve had a cold snap. The People put the flap down. Tonight, Poodle and Labrador and me go out into my yard, and the back door closes. We all pee. Labrador comes in first. I smell around a while for Rat, and when I come inside, I pass Poodle at the flap. I am barely into my kitchen when I hear the flap, and the People clap as Poodle prances into view. She finally gets it. The flap is down, the cold is shut out, and civilization has been saved, thanks to dim Poodle. Tonight she is my hero. Tomorrow, I will bite her leg again and see if she gets that.
