First the People come home and find Mouse, which Cat left in the hall for us to play with. The People are not pleased and make a quick disposal of our chew toy before Poodle can work it over. I watch from the stairs. I had nothing to do with it. Dead Mouse does not interest me. Houseflies do, and some spiders, also. I wish I could tell them that the tail of Mouse is behind the vegetable bin. Then comes supper. The People separate us now, thanks to Poodle. She is such a little piggo. I get the stairs. Labrador gets the kitchen. Poodle, they put in the laundry room. Cat doesn’t eat with us, although he often begins eating with us. I think Poodle’s excitement at meals gives Cat a stomach ache. It makes me need to quank my chew toy. Which brings me back to Mouse. He and his family are everywhere these days. Cat knows it, too. I am impressed with his hunting skills. I tell him so. He could not care less about my opinion, but I give it anyway. I smell Mouse’s family all night long. Outside, where I find myself going in circles and circles. Maybe this is where Cat and Mouse played before Cat struck for real. Inside, in the laundry room where there’s a hole in the wall and I have heard Mouses singing late at night. Tonight, the smell of Mouse is so strong that it puts a magic spell on me, and I cannot move from the hole for a long time. Upstairs on the terrace, where I smell Mouse’s family where they ran along the tree limbs I can see but not touch from my balcony. I will stay awake tonight. As long as I can. Not after I crawl into my igloo, probably, but maybe until then. Or maybe not. Mouse will be here tomorrow, probably. Or maybe not. I will stay awake as long as I can. Or maybe not. |
