It happened yesterday. I was outside with the People, who were in the pool, and before I know what is happening, I am in their hands and in the pool, too. And not on a raft this time. This time, I am in the water itself, and I feel myself sinking, and I feel my legs moving like I am trying to climb through the water, and I do, and I reach the side of the pool and climb out. Exhilarating! And sorta scary, too. The People pick me up again, and this time I am settled into the water at the end of the pool, and I must swim a lot farther to reach the side, but I do, and I shake and feel wild and race around the yard. The People let Poodle swim a few times, too, and then we are both wet and racing through the yard and to the back patio and down the path and flying off the terrace, and we are grrrrling and graaawling and wild dogs on the run. I must do this ten times before the wild leaves me, and I am exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. I am too tired to wag my tail, but I know I am smiling. This little dip comes after a long day at the Flea Market in Carpenteria, where I smell dogs everywhere and meet Chihuahua, Apple Head whose People call her Isabel. I keep running into her. I think her People are following my People. I nap in my autoseat all the way home. But I do not know a swim is coming. Labrador sleeps through the whole thing. She never mentions swimming or the ocean, so I am not sure that she knows what water is in that way. She knows bath. I know bath, too. Every civilized dog knows bath. Ida wasn’t so bad. But swimming is another thing altogether. I don’t know if I like it. Blind Poodle seems to think it is okay, and the People tell her she is very good at it. When they help her out of the pool, she stands up on her hind legs and looks in again, like she’d like to dive back in the water. It will be a long time before I would want to dive in. I think. But if Poodle does, well, I will have to. I am Chihuahua, Deer. |
