2012-02-14 11:05 PM Tunnel of Love: Valentine's Day at Tunnel's Beach With my mother and sister, we spent three, long, gorgeous days here with yummy packed lunches, drinks, beach chairs, sarongs, sunhats and bamboo mats.
The reef at Tunnels on Kauai's north shore, is Hawaii's largest coral reef. Luckily, it's only a 15 or 20-minute drive from our house! The beach is around two miles long, with different access points from the main highway (a tiny, tiny road). Deep water caverns and shallow reefs and channels make this place some of the best snorkeling! With some caution, the snorkeling and swimming is generally protected from big waves from the outter reef. Rarely do sharks meander on it too closely, but exercising caution is key! The lifeguards at Haena Beach Park keep a superbly close watch for swimmers and conditions with the current, sharks, waves, and so on. An epic surf spot for advanced surfers. A quiet [pre-visitor] morning while "shelling." A fantastic sunset view. Sparkly, acqua, clean and crystal clear water in varying shades of blue and green. Bright orange, clean sand. With a reef like this, it's amazing how many species of fish you can see within a few feet of water. You step off the beach, right onto the reef...
A day on this beach comes with some HAZARDS: SHARKS and SUNBURNS
