Smoke and Mirrors

I just finished reading this week's Strange Horizons story, Smoke and Mirrors by Amanda Downum. Lovely imagery. Cigarettes and circuses, vivid dreams and the smiles of dangerous men, black magic and an orange tom cat named "Vengeance is Mine Sayeth the Lord." Worth reading, and (although it's set on Halloween) somehow feels like good reading for Thanksgiving weekend. I was irritated, once, by a line of dialogue that seemed like an overly broad wink in the direction of Neil Gaiman, but otherwise enjoyed it straight through.

In other news, slavishly following Tina's lead once again, I think I've officially transitioned from Nano-ing to "working on the novel." (Once, that is, I decide for sure which of the two novels I'm working on.) 50K just wasn't going to happen this month. I've got a presentation to do for Topics in Logic tomorrow, another one for Epistemology right after Thanksgiving break, and three papers to write in the next couple weeks, not to speak of grading. Plus, all the cool people are doing JaNoWriMo this year anyway.
