The Almost Perfect Apartment

I think I found the apartment I'm going to rent. Yay! I still want my sister or someone else to come along with me to look at it, so I know I'm not missing something crucial, but it looks pretty good. It's in a pretty big apartment complex, but each building only has 16 apartments in it, and the grounds are fairly sprawling and grassy with lots of trees. Plus it's really near a lagoon and wildlife refuge -- and it's walking distance to downtown and to my sister's.

The main drawbacks, as far as I can see, are 1) not as much natural light as I'd like inside (apartments never have enough windows), 2) no personal yard space (though I do get a balcony) and 3) I can't afford a two bedroom. I'd really like to have a guestroom that could double as something else. But I need to get a couch, so I'll get one that converts to a bed. IKEA has a pretty cool one that's kind of like a trundle bed; it converts to a bed that feels like the couch, instead of those icky pull-out mattresses that are so awful in most sleeper couches.

There is room for my dining room table, hooray! And for my massively huge television, too. Though with a full-sized couch, I think the living room will be fairly taken up. But if I have my table I can work on quilts. And for the basting stage, I'll just have to borrow somebody else's floor. Maybe I can use the floor in the room I'll be vacating at my sister's, if they don't fill it all up with stuff all the time. Now that I'm not making their quilt anymore, I don't have to keep my projects secret from them.

My brother is turning 30 this year. HOLY COW! I'm not sure if his birthday present will be finished before his birthday, but his is the next one on the list, for sure.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited about the apartment. I think if I get it I'll be moving in late June or early July, so the timing is good.

Plus, this complex has a nice outdoor pool, heated in summer, a jacuzzi, sauna, tiny little gym room, and a rec room with a pool table and a ping-pong table. Those are all good things. The rent is $1225, plus most of the utilities, which is pretty much the going rate around here. But this place has way better amenities, and it's really clean and well taken care of. 24 hour maintenance people and night-time security. I think I'd be foolish not to take it, really. And it just feels really mellow and relaxed there. A lot of students from UCSC -- juniors, seniors and graduate students, mostly. But some families, too, and other assorted folks. I don't think I'll feel too out of place. And it's not a complete party central, either, which is good. The apartment I'd be renting is a little bit out of the way too, more on the lagoon side. So I think maybe even more quiet. Lagoon!
