We've started off the holiday weekend with a lot of running around. I purchased some used books despite not wanting to spend any money:

Ain't Nobody's Business if You Do by Peter McWilliams
Driving Mr. Albert: A Trip Across America with Einstein's Brain by Michael Paterniti
King Rat by China Mieville
Dead Men Do Tell Tales by William R. Maples, PhD, and Michael Browning

The first one is rare and out of print, the second one I wanted when it came out anyway, I've alread read the third one but didn't have a copy, and the last one has been heavily recommended.

Went to A & C (Asia and China) and got more glutinous rice, some sweet barley (it's an experiment. I'm going to try cooking it in the rice cooker to see if that works, since I can't read Chinese for the real cooking instructions), some ice cream omochi (accidentally got sesame instead of chocolate but it's pretty good), fruity sweet milk tea (another experiment), Pocky (of course), and Ramune (of course). One of the checkout girls was talking to me, but it took me a bit to figure that out as I don't understand Mandarin Chinese. It was nice that she'd think I wasn't clueless, but there you have it. Apparently she liked my hair clasp thing, which was clear when she switched to English. She was also rather disappointed that I couldn't tell her where to get one. I got the one at a Claire's years ago and have been questing for another ever since then, because if this one breaks then I'm screwed. It's a really weird design out of metal and I've broken every other thing that I've tried.

If anybody has any amusing things to do with Japanese beetles, let me know. We've sprayed 'em, thumped 'em on the head (*quite* satisfying, especially if they die, but slow), thwapped 'em with sticks, swatted 'em with flyswatters, etc. They decay really quickly, but I'm wondering if some sort of clear resin could be used on the wings to preserve them. They're green and kind of jewel-like, and well, we have a serious surplus. I'd like to have them all meet with a boojum, but alas, they won't go questing.

Rejection in from Ideomancer today. They acknowledged the cuteness of the story, but they don't want it. *sigh*
