Ian Fleming To infiltrate Goldfinger's organization, 007 will have to rick everything - including torture at the hands of the secretive millionaire's Korean henchman, Oddjob. Bond's already seen how this cold blooded assassin can kill with a well aimed toss of his razor rimmed hat, and 007 is determined not to lose his head. Bond hopes the payoff will be uncovering the connection between Goldfinger's latest criminal caper and the notorious Soviet counterespionage unit known as SMERSH. But if he fails, Bond could find himself facing grim death at the hands of a man who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. This is one of the most well known classic Bond novels. Parodies of Oddjob have been done many times, but perhaps the most well know was in Austin Powers. This is one of the Bond novels that everyone seems to either know of or have seen the movie version of, and there's a reason for this - it's one of the best. While I would still claim From Russia With Love to be my favorite of the novels so far, this one runs a very close second. By this time in the series, Bond's character is well known and well fleshed out. However, since the villain's change from novel to novel it's nice to see that Goldfinger has also been well fleshed out as well. Even the more minor characters in this book are engaging and believable. As with most of the Bond novels, there are equal parts plot and action with are more than enough to keep a reader engaged and wishing to read on until the end. Knowing what a womanizer Bond is, it's also refreshing to see one of the "Bond girls" turn him down and be more interested in another woman than in him. This happens to be the novel where the well known Pussy Galore comes in, and the Bond girl in this novel seems to prefer her to him. Not only is this refreshing when most women melt for Bond, but at the time this novel was written, it was almost unheard of to have lesbian crushes in a book. The only disappointment for me was that after fleshing out Pussy Galore and her girls as lesbians, she ends up in bed with Bond at the end. The Bond girl might have preferred Galore, but Galore ended up with Bond. I would have like to have seen her stick to her guns and turn down Bond as well. My rating: Four and a half out of five snails. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
