Mentally Replaying: "I Can't See New York," Tori Amos
I'd rather be: on vacation/talking with friends
Desiring: rest
Enjoying: forbidden bagel...

urg I'm rediculously tired. I haven't been able to get much sleep all week primarily due to staying up late and getting up early. The weekend isn't looking to be much help. Tomorrow I have to take my car to the mechanic and for any hope that he'll have to time to look at it I have to be there by seven am. Sunday is Mother's Day.

At least last night Molasses and I went to see Bend it Like Beckham. It was utterly cute and endearing, though the plot was a little formulaic. But it was totally sweet and the acting was awesome. And though I don't know anything about cinematic tricks and pacing, I thought the football (aka soccer) sequencing was wonderful. The only issue I had (again) are my damnable American ears. There were sections where I couldn't understand one in three sentances. It's possible that some of the time it was because the characters were speaking in Punjabi, but not always.

And I'm happy to report that I didn't see my parents in this movie. They're not silly like the parents in the movie (they're silly in completely different ways - though they probably would freak if I started dating a Muslim).

It reminded me strongly of Real Women have Curves, though its themes were slightly different.

Both movies were about mothers trying to uphold traditional values and get their daughters to lead "proper" lives. And in both movies this amounted to limiting the potential of the main protagonist. (And in both movies the dads were just the greatest at supporting their little girls!) But Bend It was more about the traditional roles of women that girls are supposed to assume: seeking a man out, dressing nicely and learning the arts of homemaking to please the husband's family. Real Women was about placing family first over the pursuit of one's own desires and fullfillment. Though both had strong elements of manipulating the female form to attract males. In Real Women it was the necessity to be thin; in Bend It it was larger breasts and smaller muscles.

ah well, back to work. I have to do an extra load today plus back up my desk. Over the weekend they're going to move my department one building over. It may be cool, we'll have to see. But I'm already wondering how this will impact exercising. There is a small gym here with three cardio machines, but there won't be one in the other building. The other building, however, does have a cafeteria. *sigh*
